Message from the director of CAFS

Working with the Center for Advanced Friction Studies provides a unique opportunity for
students to put their hands on leading edge experiments and interact with industries
supporting the center.  Along with a deep theoretical understanding of friction and wear
phenomena, this unique educational environment makes our graduates of high demand in
the job market.  Last but not least we offer an international experience when performing
research with leading universities from overseas.  New friendships and global exposure are
relevant attributes of well-rounded engineers.

CAFS Mission

The pursuit of knowledge in friction and the education and training of undergraduate and graduate students in subject areas of interest to the friction  industry and the state of Illinois (teaching through performing research).

To offer a creative environment allowing an active participation of faculty, students, and industrial affiliates.

CAFS Videos

This video shows the final engagements of a Formula 1 brake endurance test in which the brake rotors are tested until failure.  This helps the F1 teams gauge how thin they can allow the brake rotors to get before they need to ease up on the braking.
