Wear and Tribology Conference Announcement

40th Annual Technical Meeting of the Society of Engineering Science October 12-15, 2003 University of Michigan Ann Arbor, Michigan http://me.engin.umich.edu/SES2003 Dear Colleague It is my pleasure to invite you to participate in a Society of Engineering Science technical symposium dedicated to the understanding of wear and tribology. The technical sessions will attempt to combine the many efforts of researchers and engineers to arrive at a common understanding of the fundamentals of friction, wear, and surface interactions, wear resistant coatings and coating methods, failure and degradation mechanisms of surfaces and coatings, tribotesting methodologies, wear mode analysis methodologies, adhesion and transfer mechanisms, lubricants and lubrication, along with other issues of tribology. High quality technical papers are invited to include (but are it no way are limited to) the following topics: > Fundamentals of wear and tribology from the nano- to macro-scale. > Modeling of friction, temperature, and wear for sliding, reciprocating, fretting, and/or abrasive modes. > Elasticity and heat transfer solutions relevant to wear and surface interactions. > Cutting, grinding, lapping, and abrasive water-jet machining. > Pathologies for determining wear modes and damage mechanisms. > Advanced tribotest procedures for materials, coatings, gears, and bearings that can match observed wear and damage modes. > Coatings and surface treatment methods and behaviors as they pertain to improving wear resistance. > Lubrication and lubricants including oils, greases, and solid phases. > Advanced wear resistant materials and concepts including composites and the functional grading of properties. Please submit your abstract (one page maximum) using the online submission system at the following address: http://me.engin.umich.edu/SES2003. This site should be fully operational shortly. If you have any questions about the planned Wear and Tribology sessions, please feel free to contact: Al Segall Engineering Science and Mechanics Penn State University Phone (814) 865-7829 Fax (814) 865-9974 Email: asegall@psu.edu -over- Although not required for any of the sessions, the submission of written papers to the Journal of Engineering Science is encouraged. In the event that multiple papers are submitted in specialized areas such as nano-tribology, lubricants, or tribotesting etc., specialized sessions may be organized. More information on the SES conference and other technical sessions can be found at the following Web address: http://me.engin.umich.edu/SES2003. IMPORTANT DATES Deadline for Submission of Abstracts 13 June 2003 Reviews Returned to Authors 30 June 2003 Deadline for Revised Abstracts 30 July 2003 Deadline for Early Registration (required for inclusion of abstract in conference proceedings) 20 August 2003 Conference Program 12-15 Oct 2003
