Academic Programs

Southern Illinois University at Carbondale's objective is to provide a comprehensive educational program meeting as many individual student-needs as possible. While providing excellent instruction in a broad range of traditional programs, it also helps individual students design special programs when their interests are directed toward more individualized curricula. The University is comprised of a dedicated faculty and the necessary facilities to offer general and professional training ranging from two-year associate degrees to doctoral programs, as well as certificate and non-degree programs meeting the needs of persons not interested in degree education.

Part of the center's mission is the development of a broad academic program in the study of friction materials and their systems. This program is being designed around graduate studies and research leading to Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees that emphasize friction material science and technology.

Since the research programs within the center emphasize a multi-disciplinary approach in solving friction-related problems, graduate students working at the center may receive a degree from the engineering or scientific academic program of their choice.
