Sponsorship

The National Science Foundation, the State of Illinois, and members of the industrial consortium listed at the right sponsor the Center for Advanced Friction Studies (CAFS) jointly. Our sponsorships are a continuous record of support dating back to 1996.The sponsoring members of the consortium each send at least one representative to advisory meetings with center researchers and students twice per year. The representatives form the Industrial Advisory Board (IAB) of the Center and have voting privileges on advisement issues before the board. To join, a large company contributes $30,000 per year and a small business contributes $15,000 per year. Each company and Southern Illinois University then signs a written membership agreement.

During the advisory meetings (held approximately every six months), CAFS researchers and students present their findings from existing projects and propose new research programs. Feedback from the IAB helps to fine-tune the projects and ensure value for the sponsors. In addition to these meetings, sponsors receive detailed reports bi-annually on CD-ROM. These reports are also available through a secure page on this website. We have also prepared an index for these reports to aid in following our past work.

Each year, the center presents a conference entitled Colloquium on Braking and Friction Materials. The conference is well attended by an international audience and features an array of invited speakers as well as CAFS researchers. Each sponsoring company may send three attendees without conference fees.
